Principal's Message

Dear Round Meadow Families,

This Monday is the start of the district’s week long CyberSmart campaign.  Our teachers, computer specialist, and library media clerk will all be addressing the important issue of cyber safety.  Teachers of students in grades 1-5 have been given access to the a web-based program called Woogi World.   It offers instruction with a fun game that covers cyber safety, cyber ethics, cyber security and cyber health.
Additionally, on Tuesday, February 7 at 7 p.m., Bay Laurel Elementary will be hosting a parent information night.

Some simple things you can do to both protect and educate your student while they are online are:

1.       Place the computer they will be using in a common area such as the kitchen or living room.  This makes it easier for parents to keep an eye the content their student may be accessing online.

2.       Discourage your student from creating Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, or other social media accounts.  It is not developmentally appropriate for elementary aged children to access these sites and they have the potential for much more harm than good.

3.       Educate your student on what sites they are and are not allowed to access.  Consider installing a program that monitors a users’ actions so that you can keep track of where your student is going online.  You can also adjust your computer and internet browsers security setting to block particular sites.

4.       Keep open lines of communication with your child so that they feel comfortable coming to you with problems or issues.  Try to remain calm and don’t overreact if something goes wrong.
You want them to let you know when problems arise.

The following link has some additional tips to help you educate yourself and your student on the issue of cyber safety: http://www.cyber-safety.com/parents.html

Thank you and have a great week.  GO COLTS!

Sincerely,

Mr. Jeremy Resnick

Round Meadow Elementary, Principal
